Premier League power in the Champions League

Although Man Utd has been eliminated, the English Premier League is still the biggest force in the quarter-finals of the Champions League 2021/22 and Man City and Liverpool are the two top championship candidates.

Despite the defeat of MU, English football continued to dominate the Champions League playground when there were 3 representatives in the quarterfinals, Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Another tournament, La Liga, also has 3 representatives including Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal, but of these, only Real is really the big guy. Bayern Munich as usual is the only representative of the Bundesliga left. Benfica plays the “dark horse” of the Champions League this season, while the Serie A and Ligue 1 leagues have cleared their representatives.

The strength of the Premier League is not only reflected in the number of teams but also in the way they progress. Man City easily defeated Sporting Lisbon with a total score of 5-0 after 2 matches. Liverpool won Inter Milan 2-0 away, so a 0-1 loss at Anfield is still enough for “The Kop” to continue. Chelsea also easily defeated Lille with a total score of 4-1 despite being in a crisis at the top. The dominance of the Premier League would have been even stronger if MU had overcome Atletico.

Man City still maintains its position in the current group of leading European clubs.

According to Odd Checker after the round of 16, the bookie rated Man City as the number one candidate to win the Champions League. Followed by Liverpool, Bayern, Chelsea and Real.

In the past four years, the Premier League has replaced La Liga with the dominant position in the Champions League with 2 championships in the last 3 seasons of Liverpool and Chelsea.

In the 2018/19 season, all four Premier League clubs reached the quarterfinals. Then, Tottenham and Liverpool created an internal match in the Champions League final. The 2020/21 season is also the final of the Premier League between Chelsea and Man City.

The British also hold a series of impressive statistics before the Champions League 2021/22. Man City is the most valuable club in the quarter-finals with 977 million euros. PSG has stopped the game, so the next 2 clubs in the top 3 are still from the Premier League: Liverpool (899 million euros) and Chelsea (883 million euros).

Excluding Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, the Premier League has the three most expensive players who will play in the quarter-finals of the Champions League 2021/22: Mohamed Salah, Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku. They are all valued at 100 million euros alongside Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior.

On March 18, UEFA drew a draw to divide the quarter-finals and determine the semi-final pair for this season’s Champions League. Since the quarter-finals, clubs in the same national championship can face each other.
