Mendy: ‘Mane deserves to be fired’

According to Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, Senegal team-mate Sadio Mane deserves a red card for a foul on Cesar Azpilicueta.

“Sadio is my country brother. But he should have been sent off for a foul in the first minute,” Mendy told RMC Sport about Mane’s hand-kick on Azpilicueta’s face in Chelsea’s draw with Liverpool. 2-2 on 2/1.

A few hours after this statement, the Chelsea goalkeeper posted a photo of him sitting with Mane on the flight back to Cameroon to attend the Africa Cup of Nations – CAN, the tournament kicks off on January 9. These two 29-year-old players are both mainstays of the Senegal team.

In the early game for the ball, Mane swung his hand and hit Azpilicueta’s face, causing the Spanish defender to fall. Referee Anthony Taylor showed the fastest yellow card in Premier League history. Chelsea players reacted, thinking Mane deserved to be sent off. Azpilicueta after the game accused Mane of rough play and needed to leave the field. Coach Thomas Tuchel was shocked because VAR did not intervene.

Many experts argue on Sky Sports channel about this situation. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher thinks Mane was lucky because the ball happened in the fifth second, so the referee did not want to show a red card. This view is also shared by Gary Neville. While former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink said the foul was dangerous and should be a red card, no matter when it took place.

Eight minutes after receiving the yellow card, Mane opened the scoring for Liverpool. He took advantage of Rudiger’s mistake to clear the ball, then dribbled past his compatriot Mendy and shot into an empty goal. Mane’s 10th goal this season for Liverpool.

Mane and Mendy will be side by side when Senegal meets Zimbabwe in the first match of Group B CAN on January 10. This table also includes Guinea and Malawi. Senegal has not won the championship despite reaching the final twice, in 2002 and 2019.
