Kris Commons claims Celtic have ‘glass jaws’ as he shares defensive scare after Rangers scare

Former Celtic star Kris Commons reckons Ange Postecoglou will know he has to improve his defender ahead of next season.

The Premiership leaders are on top of title glory but have been sweated by rivals Rangers in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Parkhead.

But that point holds Postecoglou’s men accountable as they come close to title glory in the Australian’s first season.

However, Commons believes that the current defense is suffering from a “glass jaw” when they step up to play.

And great challenges may lie ahead for Celtic with a looming Champions League group stage spot.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said: “I still feel Celtic have too many chances in the big games against opponents who have some quality to exploit them in the final third.

“It’s all good and good when you’re dominating possession and scoring five or six goals against the likes of Dundee, St Mirren or St Johnstone.

“Confronted with smaller teams, Celtic press so hard and so strong that they completely crush the opponent.

“There have been a number of games this season where they have more than 80 per cent possession. It’s unbelievable to see how well they are playing.

“But there’s still a nervousness and weakness in their defense against teams that have a bit more quality and bravery for them to enter the higher pitch.

“We’ve seen it all season. Having conceded 15 times in six Europa League group stage games, Postecoglou’s side have scored more goals than any other team in the league.

“Bodo/Glimt then caused an uproar in the Europa Conference League, beating Celtic 5-1 on aggregate after two legs.

“This Celtic team has a jaw of respect and we saw it again against Rangers yesterday. In a word, Rangers will go all out to keep them from leaving Parkhead with three points.

“Celtic was there to take over.

“In the end, they got lucky in the draw. Fashion Sakala could quite easily have had a hat-trick another day.

“Ryan Kent also missed a delicious opportunity, while Joe Hart made a brilliant save to deny Scott Arfield in the second half.

“Don’t get me wrong, Celtic have missed a few opportunities of their own. But if we’re talking about how Postecoglou can improve this team, the defense seems like a clear starting point.

“There is no doubt that Carl Starfelt has improved throughout the season compared to the player who first arrived in Glasgow last summer.

“He can be pretty at times and to be fair, yesterday he faced a lot of dangers very well. But he still worries me.

“He’s one of those players who always seem to make careless fouls. Especially in possession, he doesn’t inspire confidence.

“Cameron Carter-Vickers has played well but in the bigger picture he is still part of the Celtic defence, where there are too many opportunities.

“You have to remember that this is a Rangers team playing without a recognized striker in the absence of both Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe. Sakala is not a natural number nine.

“However, Celtic still have difficulty dealing with Rangers’ attacking threat. It’s an area Postecoglou must address as it moves forward.”
