Jota urged to surpass Celtic target as former Parkhead star insists £6m transfer still makes sense

Alan Stubbs knows what it takes to play central defender for Celtic – and he counts Cameron Carter-Vickers have it in the few.

And he believes too Jota worth the investment despite the recent slump.

Stubbs won five major trophies during his time at Parkhead and has urged Ange Postecoglou to trigger the £6m buyout clause in Carter-Vickers’ loan from Spurs as soon as possible.

Scouser said: “In today’s market, £6m seems like a good value. He’s at a good age and his stock is likely to move higher.

Celtic were very wise in buying and selling – they made their fortunes from the likes of Victor Wanyama, Virgil van Dijk and Moussa Dembele – and Cameron’s resale value can skyrocket.

“There are also practical football reasons to make him a Celtic player.

“He’s shown he’s a good fit for Parkhead and with the manager’s style of play, having a centre-back who can get the ball out of defense and cause problems for the opposition helps a lot.

“He has been a rock for Ange this year. He’s easily Celtic’s best defender, who plays at least 7/10 games a week and more often than that.

“Put it this way – if they had to buy someone else that was guaranteed to be just as good, they would have to pay a pretty penny over £6m!

“No disrespect to Ross County but Celtic should beat them on Sunday and then they need to lose three of their last four games NOT to win the title.

“A home win over Rangers in the next game will confirm that and with Champions League cash effectively secured, next season could see Celtic earn as much as they do. ever earned in history.

“So they should reinvest some of that in the big guy. No wisdom. “

Stubbs will also target Portuguese winger Jota, another £6m buyout on loan from Benfica.

He said: “Without a doubt, his form has dropped since the start of the season but he has fallen short of very high standards.

“But that is the problem with the wingers. I’ve worked with a few in my time and it’s been the most unsuitable position on the pitch, mainly because people expect you to always do the unexpected.

“They can be the equalizer or they are out of the game but Jota is still 23 and most of the young players have inconsistencies.

“The opponents have also doubled him so he has to adapt to being a target if he’s going to be the player he wants to be.”
